On the Indonesian island of Bali, the arts permeate almost every aspect of daily life - attempts to please the gods and placate demons. Much of human effort is directed toward these attempts, and the pinnacle of such efforts is the ritual Eka Dasa Rudra, held once every hundred years and involving the entire population of the island. There is also a political dimension to Eka Dasa Rudra. In 1963, upon the urging of then-President Sukarno, Balinese priests prepared to hold the ritual before the proper year. Preparations were met with the first eruption in recorded history of Bali's great volcano, Gunung Agung. This terrible disaster was seen as a confirmation of the gods' and demons' powers and the necessity of honoring the traditional calendar. In the spring of 1979, when Eka Dasa Rudra was finally held, President Suharto arrived, but not by his helicopter, which, it was feared, might have impeded the demons' descent.

Description
Content description from WorldCat.org (https://www.worldcat.org/title/kataragama-a-god-for-all-seasons-disappearing-world/oclc/830033701):
Ratnyaka was 11 when he went into the jungle of Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon-and disappeared without a trace. His family consulted an astrologer who told them to put their plight to Kataragama, predicting the Hindu god would have the boy back in 21 days. While the boy's parents waited at home, the film team went to Kataragama's central shrine, witnessing terrifying scenes as worshippers thanked their god for granted favors: some walked through pits of red-hot fires or staggered on nailed shoes, while others hung themselves from butchers' hooks impaled on their backs. All the worshippers have their own vision of Kataragama, yet all agree he can do anything. At a time when other traditional gods were fading, more people were coming to Kataragama than ever in the past. After missing for more than a year, the boy Ratnyaka returned home.

Content description from Worldcat (https://www.worldcat.org/title/buddha-and-the-rice-planters/oclc/757694538):
History of Sri Lanka begins with the arrival of Buddhism from North India in the 3rd century B.C. Sinhalese village life, folklore, religious rites, sculpture, painting, music and dance became wholly integrated with Buddhism and remain so today. The Sinhalese character of devotion to religion, tolerance, and happiness in living is expressed in the video. Villagers are seen cultivating and harvesting their rice fields, before bringing gifts of food to their monks for the Vesak festival in memory of Buddha.
