An account of the resource
This collection pairs written scholarship with a corresponding collection of audiovisual resources to support the interdisciplinary study of dance and human culture. The intent is to provide students, researchers, educators, as well as the general public with access to key scholarly and philosophical writings by anthropologist of dance Dr. Joann W. Kealiinohomoku (1930-2015) in coordination with an ecclectic assortment of audiovisual materials most of which Kealiinohomoku recorded off air between 1970-2010. <br /><br />Over this 40-year period, Kealiinohomoku, an early adopter of video technology, began recording on Beta tapes, later transitioning to VHS tapes. YouTube's Internet domain name was not activated until 2005; therefore, this audiovisual collection reflects a historical pre-YouTube view of the world. <br /><br />Kealiinohomoku's holistic approach and broad anthropological perspectives invite greater understanding of dance as a human universal. The wide-ranging audiovisual content reflects Kealiinohomoku's particular research interests, popular culture of the era, and dance phenomena from a variety of cultures. It invites open-minded exploration and reflection on changes in scholarship and understanding.<br /><br /><span><span>To help researchers continue their search for audiovisual resources of interest, descriptive metadata is provided for every item, even when no video link has yet been located. In South Africa, blacks, Indians and mixed race forming 80% of the population live and work as ever apart in line with the laws of separate development. Since 1912, when the ANC was formed, the blacks and half of the white population has fought and resisted as best they can against racist laws for democratic and nonracial country. Africa on a par has replied with violence. Seventy dead at Chapel Hill 1960, 25 children killed at Soweto in 1976. In 30 years, 7000 arrests, 50,000 political prisoners of none-tried, five million displaced persons. By the end of 1970s, black Marxist governments are in power in the neighboring countries Mozambique and Angola. The Africa is surrounded by its war. Well hostility, United Nations sanctions and economic pressure calls the first cracks in the wall of apartheid, but forcing the government to embark on reforms and strengthening the resistance of the blacks.

When Mala, the best hunter in his remote Eskimo village, hears tales from other tribesmen about the White Man's ship and the guns that the White Man trades for fox skins, he is greatly impressed. Later Mala's wife Aba, who longs for the White Man's goods, suggests that Mala and their family travel to the ship, and Mala, who is concerned about providing food for the long winter, agrees. After a 500 mile journey across the frozen tundra, during which Mala graciously offers Aba's sexual services to a womanless hunter, Mala and his family arrive at Tjaranak, an inlet where the White Man's ship is harbored. Mala barters with the unscrupulous captain of the ship and trades his valuable skins for a rifle. Taken with Aba, the captain then insists she remain with him and seduces her with alcohol and useless gifts. The next day, an angry Mala forces the captain to promise to leave Aba alone while he and a group of men are away whale hunting. Later, the sailors begin to drink, and the captain orders two of his men to bring Aba to the ship. Dragged from her igloo against her will, Aba is forced to drink and is raped by the captain. The next morning, still drunk, she stumbles from the ship and collapses in the snow, where she is mistaken for an animal and is shot by a sailor. When Mala returns from the whale hunt, he is told that his wife "sleeps" and learns about the circumstances of her death. Enraged, he kills the captain with a harpoon and rushes back to his tribe with his children. Back in his village, Mala grieves for Aba but leads his tribesman in a successful caribou hunt. While staring at a slain caribou, however, Mala sees the image of the captain and consults with a Wise Old One about his vision. The Wise Old One advises him to ask the Spirits for a new name, so that the captain cannot follow him, and Mala goes to a sacred hilltop to pray. Inspired by a bird that flies overhead, Mala takes the name Kripik and begins to dance and chant. He then notices that Iva, the second wife of another hunter, has followed him and reveals to her his new name. With his new identity, Mala warms to Iva, who has always loved him and has been offered to him by her husband, and agrees to "lie down" with her. Out of respect for Mala, the other hunter offers him his first wife as well and announces that he is leaving the village for good. While Mala enjoys his new family, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police post is established in the Tjaranak inlet, and after the two Mounties in charge learn of the captain's killing, they set out to find and arrest Mala. Near his village, Mala comes across the nearly frozen bodies of the Mounties and reluctantly takes them to his igloo. After they recover sufficiently, the Mounties question Mala about his identity and, through their English speaking Eskimo guide, learn that he is the captain's killer. Although grateful to Mala, the Mounties trick him into leaving his family by telling him that they need his help in securing food at the inlet. While Mala is out wolf hunting for the post, Inspector White arrives and demands that Mala be treated like a prisoner. Reluctantly the Mounties tell Mala, who has learned that his family is alone and starving in the village, that he cannot go home and, breaking a promise they made to him, shackle him to his bed. Enduring great pain and injury, Mala wriggles his hand out of the shackle and, with his dog team, escapes before daylight. The Mounties dutifully pursue him, aware that with his injured hand his chances of a successful flight are limited. After a grueling journey, Mala finally is rescued by his eldest son near his deserted village. Determined not to be re-captured by the traitorous white men, Mala announces that he is leaving the family but is followed by the loyal Iva. As they head for an ice floe, Mala and Iva are pursued by the approaching Mounties. Unable to stop Mala without shooting him, the Mounties decide at last to give the brave Eskimo his freedom.

This is the classic film of cultural confrontation that is as compelling today as when it was first released over 20 years ago. When Columbus and Cortez ventured into the New World there was no camera to record the drama of this first encounter. But, in 1930, when the Leahy brothers penetrated the interior of New Guinea in search of gold, they carried a movie camera. Thus they captured on film their unexpected confrontation with thousands of Stone Age people who had no concept of human life beyond their valleys. This amazing footage forms the basis of First contact. Yet there is more to this extraordinary film than the footage that was recovered. Fifty years later some of the participants are still alive and vividly recall their unique experience. The Papuans tell how they thought the white men were their ancestors, bleached by the sun and returned from the dead. They were amazed at the artifacts of 20th century life such as tin cans, phonographs and airplanes. When shown their younger, innocent selves in the found footage, they recall the darker side of their relationship with these mysterious beings with devastating weapons. Australian Dan Leahy describes his fear at being outnumbered by primitive looking people with whom he could not speak. He felt he had to dominate them for his own survival and to continue his quest for gold. First contact is one of those rare films that holds an audience spell-bound. Humor and pathos are combined in this classic story of colonialism, told by the people who were there.

This collection pairs written scholarship with a corresponding collection of audiovisual resources to support the interdisciplinary study of dance and human culture. The intent is to provide students, researchers, educators, as well as the general public with access to key scholarly and philosophical writings by anthropologist of dance Dr. Joann W. Kealiinohomoku (1930-2015) in coordination with an ecclectic assortment of audiovisual materials most of which Kealiinohomoku recorded off air between 1970-2010. <br /><br />Over this 40-year period, Kealiinohomoku, an early adopter of video technology, began recording on Beta tapes, later transitioning to VHS tapes. YouTube's Internet domain name was not activated until 2005; therefore, this audiovisual collection reflects a historical pre-YouTube view of the world. <br /><br />Kealiinohomoku's holistic approach and broad anthropological perspectives invite greater understanding of dance as a human universal. The wide-ranging audiovisual content reflects Kealiinohomoku's particular research interests, popular culture of the era, and dance phenomena from a variety of cultures. Looks at Africa in the aftermath of colonial rule, as the continent seeks ways to come to terms with its diverse inheritance. Such issues as the rapid growth of modern cities like Lagos, Nigeria and Nairobi, Kenya and the problems they are facing are featured. The results of failed political institutions of the colonial rule (i.e. the parliamentary system) such as corruption and leaders like Bokassa of the Central African Republic and Idi Amin on Uganda. The issue of tribalism or the internal wars caused by the colonial borders being transferred to national borders is featured. Finally, neocolonialism is discussed and is referred to as the increase in cost of imports while the value of exports falls. Features interviews with various African statesmen, including Ex-President Alhaji Shehu Shagari of Nigeria, President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania, Chairman Jerry Rawlings of Ghana, President Samora Machel of Mozambique and Prime Minister Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, who discuss the problems and successes of Africa today. An account of the resource
This collection pairs written scholarship with a corresponding collection of audiovisual resources to support the interdisciplinary study of dance and human culture. The intent is to provide students, researchers, educators, as well as the general public with access to key scholarly and philosophical writings by anthropologist of dance Dr. Joann W. Kealiinohomoku (1930-2015) in coordination with an ecclectic assortment of audiovisual materials most of which Kealiinohomoku recorded off air between 1970-2010. <br /><br />Over this 40-year period, Kealiinohomoku, an early adopter of video technology, began recording on Beta tapes, later transitioning to VHS tapes. YouTube's Internet domain name was not activated until 2005; therefore, this audiovisual collection reflects a historical pre-YouTube view of the world. <br /><br />Kealiinohomoku's holistic approach and broad anthropological perspectives invite greater understanding of dance as a human universal. The wide-ranging audiovisual content reflects Kealiinohomoku's particular research interests, popular culture of the era, and dance phenomena from a variety of cultures. It invites open-minded exploration and reflection on changes in scholarship and understanding.<br /><br /><span><span>To help researchers continue their search for audiovisual resources of interest, descriptive metadata is provided for every item, even when no video link has yet been located. On the Indonesian island of Bali, the arts permeate almost every aspect of daily life - attempts to please the gods and placate demons. Much of human effort is directed toward these attempts, and the pinnacle of such efforts is the ritual Eka Dasa Rudra, held once every hundred years and involving the entire population of the island. There is also a political dimension to Eka Dasa Rudra. In 1963, upon the urging of then-President Sukarno, Balinese priests prepared to hold the ritual before the proper year. Preparations were met with the first eruption in recorded history of Bali's great volcano, Gunung Agung. This terrible disaster was seen as a confirmation of the gods' and demons' powers and the necessity of honoring the traditional calendar. In the spring of 1979, when Eka Dasa Rudra was finally held, President Suharto arrived, but not by his helicopter, which, it was feared, might have impeded the demons' descent.
