Joann W. Kealiinohomoku Dance & Human Culture Audiovisual/Scholarship Collection

An account of the resource
This collection pairs written scholarship with a corresponding collection of audiovisual resources to support the interdisciplinary study of dance and human culture. The intent is to provide students, researchers, educators, as well as the general public with access to key scholarly and philosophical writings by anthropologist of dance Dr. Joann W. Kealiinohomoku (1930-2015) in coordination with an ecclectic assortment of audiovisual materials most of which Kealiinohomoku recorded off air between 1970-2010. <br /><br />Over this 40-year period, Kealiinohomoku, an early adopter of video technology, began recording on Beta tapes, later transitioning to VHS tapes. YouTube's Internet domain name was not activated until 2005; therefore, this audiovisual collection reflects a historical pre-YouTube view of the world. <br /><br />Kealiinohomoku's holistic approach and broad anthropological perspectives invite greater understanding of dance as a human universal. The wide-ranging audiovisual content reflects Kealiinohomoku's particular research interests, popular culture of the era, and dance phenomena from a variety of cultures. It invites open-minded exploration and reflection on changes in scholarship and understanding.<br /><br /><span><span>To help researchers continue their search for audiovisual resources of interest, descriptive metadata is provided for every item, even when no video link has yet been located. Babes on Broadway is a 1941 American musical film starring Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland and directed by Busby Berkeley, with Vincente Minnelli directing Garland's big solo numbers. The film, which features Fay Bainter and Virginia Weidler, was the third in the "Backyard Musical" series about kids who put on their own show, following Babes in Arms (1939) and Strike Up the Band (1940). Songs in the film include "Babes on Broadway" by Burton Lane (music) and E.Y. "Yip" Harburg (lyrics), and "How About You?" by Lane with lyrics by Ralph Freed, the brother of producer Arthur Freed. The movie ends with a minstrel show performed by the main cast in blackface.

Allan Quatermain (Stewart Granger), an experienced hunter and guide, reluctantly agrees to help Elizabeth Curtis (Deborah Kerr) and her brother John Goode (Richard Carlson) search for her husband, who disappeared in the unexplored African interior while searching for the legendary titular mines. They have a copy of the map he used. A tall, mysterious native, Umbopa (Siriaque), joins the safari. Allan has no use for women on a safari, but during the long and grueling journey, he and Elizabeth begin to fall in love.
The party encounters Van Brun (Hugo Haas), a lone white man living with a tribe. They learn that he met Curtis. However, when Allan recognizes him as a fugitive who cannot afford to let them go, they take him hostage to leave the village safely. Van Brun tries to shoot Allan, killing his faithful right-hand man Khiva (Kimursi), instead. Allan dispatches Van Brun and the party flees from the angry villagers.
When they finally reach the region where the mines are supposed to be, they are met by people who resemble Umbopa. They discover that their companion is royalty; he has returned to attempt to dethrone the evil King Twala (Baziga). Umbopa leaves with his supporters, while Allan, Elizabeth and John travel to a tense meeting with Twala. With his last rifle bullet, John kills a would-be attacker, temporarily quelling the natives.
The king's advisor, Gagool (Sekaryongo), communicates that they have seen Curtis and leads them to a cave that contains a trove of jewels and in which they find the skeletal remains of Elizabeth's husband. While they are distracted by this discovery, Gagool sneaks away and triggers a booby trap that seals them inside the cave. Leaving the jewels behind, they find a way out through an underground stream and return to the settlement, just as Umbopa and his followers arrive.
Umbopa's people have an unusual method of deciding the kingship. The two claimants duel to the death. Despite cheating by one of Twala's men, Umbopa wins. Afterwards, he provides an escort for his friends' return trip.

Royal Wedding is a 1951 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer musical comedy film starring Fred Astaire and Jane Powell, with music by Burton Lane and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner. The film was directed by Stanley Donen; it was his second film and the first he directed on his own. It was released as Wedding Bells in the United Kingdom.
The story is set in London in 1947 at the time of the wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten. Astaire and Powell play siblings in a song and dance duo, echoing the real-life theatrical relationship of Fred and Adele Astaire.
Royal Wedding is one of several MGM musicals that entered public domain because the studio failed to renew the copyright registration in the 28th year after its publication.

But per chance the meet Paul Whiteman in person and are able to convince him, that their band is good enough, so he lends them the money. But then one of their friends becomes seriously ill and had to be carried in a hospital per plane, they had to use Whiteman's money for this.

An account of the resource
This collection pairs written scholarship with a corresponding collection of audiovisual resources to support the interdisciplinary study of dance and human culture. The intent is to provide students, researchers, educators, as well as the general public with access to key scholarly and philosophical writings by anthropologist of dance Dr. Joann W. Kealiinohomoku (1930-2015) in coordination with an ecclectic assortment of audiovisual materials most of which Kealiinohomoku recorded off air between 1970-2010. <br /><br />Over this 40-year period, Kealiinohomoku, an early adopter of video technology, began recording on Beta tapes, later transitioning to VHS tapes. YouTube's Internet domain name was not activated until 2005; therefore, this audiovisual collection reflects a historical pre-YouTube view of the world. <br /><br />Kealiinohomoku's holistic approach and broad anthropological perspectives invite greater understanding of dance as a human universal. The wide-ranging audiovisual content reflects Kealiinohomoku's particular research interests, popular culture of the era, and dance phenomena from a variety of cultures. It invites open-minded exploration and reflection on changes in scholarship and understanding.<br /><br /><span><span>To help researchers continue their search for audiovisual resources of interest, descriptive metadata is provided for every item, even when no video link has yet been located. Ziegfeld is a theatrical impresario, whose show business empire begins when he stage-manages a tour for a strongman. With almost no money in the bank, he charms European stage star Anna Held into coming to America to headline his "Follies." From 1907, Ziegfeld stages annual editions of Broadway's most fabulous revue. Eventually, Ziegfeld abandons Anna in favor of other beauties. Ziegfeld comes to realize that his new romance with Follies girl, Audrey Dane, is all wrong, settling instead for good-natured actress Billie Burke. Bankrupted by the Depression, Ziegfeld dies as he plans a spectacular comeback.
