Description
Content description from WorldCat (https://www.worldcat.org/title/hanging-gardens-of-arabia/oclc/85985570):
For hundreds of years, the mountain farmers of Yemen maintained a system of terraces that was a model of sustainable agriculture. Both they and their colleagues some 200 miles away benefitted from a seasonal rainfall that carried water and topsoil into the flatlands. Over the last two decades this system has started to crumble, with potentially disastrous consequences. This programme sets out to investigate what has gone wrong and what can be done to reverse the damage. It finds that deforestation is partly to blame, thus leaving the land vulnerable to erosion. In addition there is the inability of farmers to keep the terraces in good repair, primarily because economic and social changes have resulted in young people moving to the cities. Various international agencies are involved in providing assistance, but the outlook is not good.
