Description
Content description from New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/1987/11/26/arts/erick-hawkins-to-get-scripps-dance-award.html):
Erick Hawkins is to receive the 1988 Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award. Mr. Hawkins will be given the award, established to honor American modern dance choreographers who have made a lifetime contribution to the art form, in a presentation ceremony and performance on June 15 at the festival in Durham, N.C.
"Erick Hawkins is a true American original with his own teaching technique and style," Charles L. Reinhart, director of the festival, said in announcing the award. Mr. Hawkins choreographed his first dance 50 years ago, becoming known for a style that emphasized serene, flowing movement and ceremonial dances that drew from sources as diverse as Eastern philosophies and American history. His company will perform at the Joyce Theater, Eighth Avenue at 19th Street in New York City, from Tuesday to Dec. 6.
