Description
Content description from NYT Archives (https://www.nytimes.com/1985/06/15/arts/dance-in-memory-of-a-new-robbins-ballet.html) :
"Jerome Robbins has choreographed a moving ballet titled ''In Memory of . . . '' and it is about a young woman, personified with piteous beauty by Suzanne Farrell, who comes to terms with her own death.
Nowadays, ballets, especially those by Mr. Robbins, can rarely be summed up so succinctly. But in this case one must ask whether the music is also ''about'' something specific that finds its visual counterpart onstage.
Indeed, Mr. Robbins's new work -led also by Adam Luders and Joseph Duell and given its premiere Thursday night by the New York City Ballet at the State Theater - is very closely tied to its score. This is the 1935 Violin Concerto by Alban Berg - dedicated to Manon Gropius (the daughter of the singer Alma Mahler and the architect Walter Gropius), who had just died at the age of 18."
-Anna Kisselgoff for the New York Times
