Description
Content description from South Sentinel's Archives () :
Linda Wilhoit, principal of South Plantation High School, said that a nationally televised news story on Thursday night about high school students using steroids was the kind of exposure needed to combat a growing problem.
"They did what I was trying to do, which was to educate the nation and the parents and the high school students that this is a problem. Don't get involved with it," Wilhoit said.
Wilhoit and students at her school were featured in a story by ABC-TV's 20/20 dealing with the dangers and popularity of steroids, which increase muscle development. The drugs apparently have become a fad among image-conscious teen-agers, a situation reported in the South Plantation school paper by senior reporter Lori Shnider. Physicians warn of possible long-term damages caused by steroids, including liver, heart and kidney ailments. Wilhoit told a 20/20 reporter that parents call her wondering how to tell if their child may be using the drugs. She said that if a teen-ager suddenly grows "from 130 pounds to 210 pounds ... you have a pretty good idea that's what they're doing." ABC researchers for the program came to the school in February to do the interviews after local news accounts of steroid use by students.
