Description
Content description from Worldcat (https://www.worldcat.org/title/frontier-bolivia-god-gave-us-the-leaf/oclc/1006132797):
The illegal cocaine trade in Bolivia, and the government's attempts to eradicate the coca plant. The second hour of Brian Moser's 1983 three-hour documentary about the illicit drug. It concentrates on the history of the coca leaf in Bolivia, and its importance in the lives of the Indians in the Andes, who attempt to deal with escalating taxes on the drug and North American pressure to stop its production in order to stem the flow of "blow" into the United States. Highlights include: a history of how coca has been chewed by miners in the Andes for five hundred years, to provide them with sustenance to do their strenuous work; the miners complain about escalating taxes on the drug, which is making coca unaffordable to them; coca farmers -- of the traditional growing area known as the Yungas -- meet with the Minister of Agriculture to plead that there be a reverse on rising coca taxes; a peasant's charge that brutal drug enforcement officials rape women who are caught trying to smuggle coca for cocaine production; an interview with a coca farmer in Chapare who explains how North American pressure against production of the drug has made the lives of farmers more perilous; and footage of the Army Narcotics Unit destroying cocaine in Bolivia.
