WQED joined forces with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and produced a one-hour television special which, in the opinion of the Peabody Board, has exceptional merit. Viewers were treated to a marvelous look at what goes on behind the scenes as the choreographer, the costumer, and others sought to create "Firebird." Later, there followed the story of the growth of the ballet company, a profile of some of those who made up its cast, and finally, to the premier performance itself at New York City Center. Arthur Mitchell has distinguished himself with an excellent script which provided the basis for this outstanding use of television. The Shell Companies Foundation and the Program Fund of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting contributed to the funding which made this Peabody Award-winning effort possible.
